An engineer's view of the main UK oil boiler makes - what each is like to live with, service and get parts for.

Short answer

The main UK oil boiler manufacturers all make competent condensing appliances with similar headline efficiencies. What actually differs is parts availability, ease of servicing, build quality of the casing, and how the appliance behaves when something goes wrong.

What actually distinguishes them

Every current oil boiler from a mainstream manufacturer is a condensing appliance with a quoted efficiency in a narrow band. Comparing those figures is close to pointless – the difference between them is smaller than the difference between a well-commissioned boiler and a badly commissioned one of the same model.

What genuinely differs, and what we would look at:

  1. Parts availability and lead time. The single most important practical factor. A boiler whose parts are stocked by wholesalers is a boiler that can be repaired the same day.
  2. Ease of servicing. How the burner comes out, how the baffles are arranged, whether the chamber can be cleaned properly, and how much the casing fights you.
  3. Casing and build quality, particularly on external models where the casing is doing real work.
  4. Controls and diagnostics – whether the appliance tells you anything useful when it fails.
  5. Burner arrangement. Many use the same third-party burners, which is good news for parts.
  6. Warranty terms and what they require of you.

The makes we see most

Grant

Very widely fitted in the UK and consequently very well supported – parts are stocked, engineers know them, and there is a large installed base. The Vortex range in particular is common across Norfolk. Generally straightforward to service, with sensible access. External models are common and reasonably well made. If parts availability is your main concern, this is a safe answer.

Firebird

Another very common choice, and well represented in this region. Comparable in most respects to Grant on parts and support. The Envirogreen range is what we see most. Perfectly serviceable appliances that do not spring surprises.

Warmflow

Strong presence in the UK oil market with a good reputation for build, and external models that are well regarded for their casings – which matters more than it sounds on an exposed Norfolk site. Support is good.

Worcester Bosch Danesmoor

Worcester’s oil range, benefiting from Bosch’s parts and service network. Well built, well supported, and a name most householders recognise. Tends to sit at the higher end on price.

Mistral

Long-established in oil, particularly known for external and combination models, and for offering configurations others do not. Worth considering where the installation has an awkward requirement.

Most of them use the same burners

A large proportion of UK oil boilers are fitted with burners from a small number of specialist manufacturers, regardless of whose badge is on the casing. That is genuinely good news: it means the components that actually wear – nozzles, electrodes, pumps, photocells, control boxes – are widely available and well understood, whatever boiler you have.

Combi, system or heat-only in oil

The same architecture question as gas, with one important difference.

Our general view for rural Norfolk property: a heat-only or system boiler with a well-sized cylinder suits most of the housing stock better than a combi, because the properties tend to be larger, hot water demand is higher, and the mains supply is frequently not brilliant. But there are plenty of houses where a combi is exactly right.

What we would actually ask before recommending one

  • Internal or external? This narrows the range immediately and casing quality becomes important if external.
  • What heat output does the heat loss calculation give? Not what the old one was.
  • Cylinder or combi? Driven by hot water demand and available space.
  • How accessible is the position? A boiler in a tight cupboard needs good service access designed in.
  • Is there an existing relationship with a brand? If every boiler in a portfolio is one make, standardising has real value for parts and familiarity.
  • What is the local parts position? This is where we can add something genuinely useful, because we know what our wholesalers stock.

What we would not do is tell you there is one best make. There is not, and anybody who says otherwise is either selling a particular brand or has not worked on enough of them.

The things that matter more than the badge

  1. Correct sizing. An oversized boiler of any make short-cycles and runs inefficiently. This matters far more than the brand.
  2. Proper commissioning. Pump pressure to the data plate, combustion analysed and set. A well-commissioned cheap boiler beats a badly commissioned expensive one.
  3. Condensate routing. Internal where possible. This determines whether you have a boiler that fails in January.
  4. System cleanliness. A new heat exchanger on a dirty system has a short life, whatever the badge.
  5. Annual servicing. Required by every manufacturer, and the thing that actually determines lifespan.
  6. The tank and the oil line. A new boiler fed by a failing tank through a tired line will have early-life problems that get blamed on the boiler.

If you spend your decision-making energy on any of those rather than on the brand, you will get a better outcome.

Which oil boiler is the most reliable?

There is no honest single answer. The mainstream makes are all competent, and reliability in practice is driven far more by sizing, commissioning, condensate routing and annual servicing than by which badge is on the casing.

Which has the best parts availability?

The widely fitted makes – which in this region means Grant and Firebird are very well supported, with Worcester benefiting from the Bosch network. It is worth asking your installer what their wholesaler actually stocks.

Are more expensive oil boilers better?

They are often better built, particularly casings on external models, and better supported. Whether that is worth the difference depends on the installation – an external boiler on an exposed site justifies spending on the casing more than an internal one does.

Do they all use the same burner?

Many use burners from a small number of specialist manufacturers, which is genuinely useful because the wearing components are then common across makes and widely available.

Should I replace like for like?

Not without checking the sizing. The old boiler was very likely oversized, and the house has probably changed since. Staying with the same make is reasonable; staying with the same output usually is not.

What about the warranty?

Compare the conditions as well as the length. All of them require annual servicing by a competent person and system cleaning to standard, and several now require a magnetic filter. A long warranty with unmet conditions is not a long warranty.
