Heated towel rails

Plumbed, electric or dual fuel, so it still works in summer when the heating is off.

Short answer

Towel rails come in three forms – plumbed, electric and dual fuel. The important thing to check is output: a rail that replaces a radiator frequently produces considerably less heat, and in a cold bathroom that is felt immediately.

The output point, first

A towel rail is usually a weaker radiator

Ladder rails are chosen on appearance, and their heat output for a given wall area is frequently well below the panel radiator they replace. Swapping a radiator for a similarly sized towel rail can leave a bathroom noticeably colder. Check the manufacturer’s stated output against the room’s heat requirement before ordering, not after.

Two further points that make the published figures misleading in a bathroom:

  • Output is quoted at a stated flow temperature. A system running at a lower flow temperature – which is the direction modern condensing boilers and heat pumps go – produces proportionally less. A rail quoted at a high temperature may deliver a fraction of that on a well-set-up system.
  • Towels on the rail reduce output into the room. That is not a fault, it is the rail doing its other job. But a rail sized with no margin, covered in towels, on a low flow temperature, will not heat a bathroom.

The answer is not always a bigger rail. Frequently it is a towel rail for towels plus a separate emitter – a compact radiator or underfloor heating – for the room. That combination works considerably better than one compromise.

The three types

Plumbed

The simplest and the cheapest to run where the heat source is gas or oil. The limitation is that it only works when the heating is on, which for most of the year is when you least need it. Some people fit a valve arrangement or a separate zone to run the bathroom circuit in summer; that adds complexity and it does work.

Electric

Independent of the heating entirely, with a thermostat and a timer in the better ones. Needs a fused connection installed to the requirements for a bathroom, which is an electrician’s work. Higher running cost per unit, short hours.

Dual fuel

A plumbed rail with an electric element fitted in one leg, plus a valve arrangement that lets it work either way. Heating circuit in winter, element on its own in summer. It is the arrangement most people want once it is explained, and it is a modest addition at the time of installation – considerably more awkward to add later.

Valves, and the one that catches people out

  • A TRV and a lockshield, as with any radiator, for a plumbed rail.
  • A dual fuel valve set, which includes the arrangement needed for the element to work when the circuit is isolated.
  • Angled, straight or corner valves, which decides how it sits against the wall – a straight valve on a rail with bottom-centre connections looks wrong and a corner valve frequently looks right.
  • An air vent at the top, because a ladder rail traps air readily and a rail that is hot at the bottom and cold at the top is almost always air rather than a fault.
The TRV in a bathroom

A thermostatic valve on a bathroom towel rail measures air temperature, which in a bathroom rises sharply during a shower and then falls. The valve closes just when the room has been made damp and needs the heat. It is a genuine reason many bathrooms are better on a lockshield pair, with the room’s temperature controlled by the system rather than locally. Worth a conversation rather than a default.

Fitting one properly

  1. Check the output against the roomManufacturer’s figure at your system’s actual flow temperature, against the room’s requirement. This is the step that gets skipped.
  2. Check the wallA filled rail is heavy, and a ladder rail on plasterboard needs proper fixings into something structural. Noggins, if the wall is open.
  3. Check the pipe centresAgainst the existing pipework. Rails come in defined centres and a mismatch means altering pipework, which on a tiled wall is not trivial.
  4. Plan the heightPractical for hanging a towel, clear of the basin and the door, and with the bottom rail not so low that it is a shin hazard.
  5. Electrical requirements for an elementBathroom zones, protective measures and a suitable connection point – an electrician’s call and part of the design.
  6. Fit, fill and ventThoroughly. Ladder rails hold air and need proper venting.
  7. Balance itAgainst the rest of the system. A newly fitted rail frequently takes more than its share and starves something else – see system balancing.
  8. Check for leaks under heatAs everything expands.

Chrome rails in particular are worth a word: chrome-plated rails generally have lower output than the painted equivalent of the same size, because of the finish. If you are choosing chrome for appearance, allow for it in the sizing.

Can I fit one to a plasterboard wall?

With proper fixings into something structural. A filled ladder rail is heavy and plasterboard alone will not hold it – noggins if the wall is open, suitable heavy-duty fixings if it is not.
