Guides to the equipment we install and service most – oil boilers, oil tanks, hot water cylinders, gas boilers and air conditioning – built from recorded job observations rather than from brochures.

What these are, and what they are not

There is no shortage of manufacturer information about heating equipment. What there is very little of is accumulated engineer experience: which faults recur on which models, which parts are a nuisance to get, which appliances fight you when you service them, and what a given fault code usually turns out to mean in practice.

That is what these pages are being built to hold. Three things they are deliberately not:

  • Not rewritten brochure copy. If you want the manufacturer’s description, the manufacturer’s site is better at it.
  • Not reliability rankings. We have not collected data that would support them, so we are not going to publish them.
  • Not affiliate recommendations. Nothing here is sponsored and we do not receive anything for naming a make.
Built from job records, which takes time

The per-model pages are populated from what we actually find on site – common faults, part numbers, service quirks, access notes. That accumulates rather than being written in an afternoon, and it is worth considerably more than a rewritten datasheet. Pages appear as the records support them.

The things that apply across all of it

Whatever the make or model, a short list determines how long equipment lasts and how well it runs:

  1. Annual servicing, properly done. On oil that means the burner comes out; on gas it means combustion analysis and the condensate trap; on air conditioning it means filters, coils and drainage. It is the single biggest determinant of lifespan for all of them.
  2. Correct sizing. Oversizing is the most common specification error across boilers, cylinders and air conditioning alike, and it makes everything worse rather than safer.
  3. A clean system. Magnetite destroys heat exchangers and pumps; scale destroys coils and plate exchangers.
  4. Correct commissioning. Pump pressure, combustion, refrigerant charge, vacuum. Invisible afterwards and decisive.
  5. Condensate and drainage. Frozen condensate and blocked drains between them account for a very large share of all call-outs.
  6. Where it lives. External and unheated positions shorten equipment life across every category.
  7. Somebody looking at it. Most failures give warning for months. Almost nobody is watching.

Why accumulated observation beats a datasheet

A manufacturer’s documentation describes the appliance as designed and commissioned. It is accurate and it answers a different question from the one an owner usually has, which is how this particular model behaves after eight years in a real building.

The things only accumulated experience tells you:

  • Which fault codes are misleading. Several point at a component and turn out, repeatedly, to be a blocked condensate trap or marginal gas pressure under load. A datasheet cannot tell you that; a hundred visits can.
  • Which parts are a nuisance to obtain. Availability varies by manufacturer and by region, and it changes over time. It is frequently the deciding factor in whether an appliance is worth repairing.
  • Which appliances fight you on service. Some are designed with the engineer in mind and some are not, and it shows up as service quality over the appliance’s life rather than as a fault.
  • Where the weak points actually are. Not the ones a manufacturer would list, but the ones that turn up again and again in a particular position or a particular water quality.
  • What a given symptom usually means on that model, as opposed to what it could theoretically mean.
  • How the appliance behaves in hard water, which is not something national documentation addresses and which matters considerably in this county.

None of that is opinion or ranking. It is recorded observation, and it is why these pages take time to build rather than being written in an afternoon.

Why we name makes at all

Some trade sites avoid naming manufacturers, presumably to stay out of trouble. We think it is more useful to be specific, with two rules.

  • We describe what we find, not what we assume. If a model has a recurring fault we see regularly, that is worth saying.
  • We do not rank. We will not tell you one make is more reliable than another, because we have not collected the data to support that and neither has anybody else publishing such lists.

Where we have a genuine view – that parts availability is better for some makes than others in this region, for instance – we say so and explain why it is our view rather than presenting it as fact.

Do you recommend a particular brand?

Not as a general answer. The mainstream makes are all competent and reliability in practice is driven by sizing, commissioning, condensate routing and servicing far more than by the badge.

We work on all the common makes across oil, gas and cooling. Parts availability is the real constraint on very old appliances and we will tell you straight away if we think it will be a problem.

Where can I find the manufacturer’s manual?

The manufacturer’s own site, which is better at that than we would be. These pages cover what the manuals do not.

Can I suggest an appliance to cover?

Yes. If it is something we see regularly and have notes on, it is a reasonable candidate.
