We work across Norwich and Norfolk, specialising in oil heating because that is what this county actually needs. The way we work is deliberately old-fashioned: diagnose before quoting, put it in writing, and say so when a job is not worth doing.
Why oil
Most plumbing and heating businesses in Britain are built around gas, because most of Britain is on gas. Norfolk is not.
An estimated 158,414 homes in this county – around 35.6 per cent of domestic property – have no mains gas connection. That is roughly 2.6 times the Great Britain average, and four of Norfolk’s seven districts sit in the national top twenty-five for off-grid density.
So while oil heating is a niche nationally, here it is the mainstream. And because it is a niche nationally, there are fewer engineers who genuinely specialise in it – which is a gap worth filling properly rather than treating as a sideline.
That focus shows in the work and it shows on this site. The oil section is the most detailed part of it, because that is where we have most to say.
See the Norfolk off-grid heating map for the data and its limits.
How we work
- You speak to an engineer. Not a call centre, not a scheduler working from a script. Most problems can be narrowed down on the phone by somebody who knows what questions to ask.
- Diagnosis before price. A price given before anybody has established what is wrong is a price that will change. We would rather look at it.
- Written, itemised quotes. So you can see what you are paying for, and so you can compare it properly with somebody else’s – which on a boiler replacement is almost never about the appliance.
- Told before it happens. Anything found once work has started is discussed before it is done, not added to an invoice.
- Honest when the answer is no. We tell people their boiler is fine, that a job can wait, and that they need a different trade, regularly. It costs us call-outs and it is why people call again.
- The paperwork. Certificates, benchmark records, combustion readings. You should end up holding the evidence, not just the invoice.
What we are honest about
A few things on this site that most trade websites would handle differently:
- We do not publish prices. We would like to, and we will when we have a dataset from our own completed work that we can stand behind. Publishing invented ranges would be worse than publishing none – see what things cost.
- We do not publish a water hardness figure for your postcode, because the numbers circulating online are unverified aggregations. Your water company publishes the authoritative figure.
- We do not publish heating oil prices, because we have no licensed source and scraping comparison sites is not a foundation we are prepared to build on.
- We do not display registration numbers we have not recorded. Where a credential is held but the number is not yet on file, it does not appear here until it is.
- Tools that are not built yet say so, rather than implying otherwise.
- Images generated by AI are labelled as such and are never presented as our own work or our own team.
Because a trade website that will not publish an unsourced number is a trade website whose sourced numbers you can trust. The discipline is the point.
What the county actually requires
Three conditions shape almost everything we deal with:
| Condition | What it means for the work |
|---|---|
| Chalk geology, hard water | Scale on every surface that heats water – boiler exchangers, cylinder coils, immersion elements, plate exchangers, tap cartridges. Water treatment comes up far more here than elsewhere |
| High off-grid density | Oil tanks, siting rules, containment near Norfolk’s many drainage ditches, and the run-dry problem |
| Older, frequently solid-walled housing | Higher heat loss, which makes heat pumps harder and fabric work more valuable. Nothing is standard and the surprises are routine |
| Drained agricultural land | Ditches and dykes everywhere, which triggers the secondary containment requirement for oil storage far more often than people expect |
| Rural property and second homes | Longer response times, more frozen pipes, and empty properties over winter |
| Coastal exposure | Salt corrosion on external plant – outdoor boiler casings and air conditioning condensers in particular |
See Norfolk for more on working here.
Where we are going
Honestly stated, because a plan is more useful than a claim:
- More depth on oil, which is where we can offer something genuinely hard to find.
- A real price index built from our own completed jobs, which is the single most valuable thing we could publish and which takes time to accumulate.
- Working tools rather than lead-capture forms. Free, no email, nothing stored.
- Case studies from actual jobs, photographed on the day, with the customer’s permission – not stock imagery.
- Commercial growth across East Anglia, limited by people rather than by demand – see careers.
- Properly sourced data, with methodology and limits stated, rather than figures with no provenance.
Want to know whether we are the right people for your job? Call and describe it. We will tell you honestly, including when the answer is no.
Questions we get asked about this
How long have you been working in Norfolk?
Oil boiler servicing, unvented cylinders and bathrooms have been the core of the work for years, and the business has been trading in this county throughout. Ask on the phone if the specifics matter to you.
What qualifications do you hold?
We hold the competences for the work we advertise. Where a registration number has not yet been recorded on file, it does not appear on this site – which is deliberate, and we will discuss it directly.
Are you insured?
Current insurance certificates are available on request and we would rather you asked than assumed. For commercial work, tell us what your procurement process requires at the outset.
Do you use subcontractors?
For bathrooms we work as one team rather than handing you five phone numbers. Where a genuine specialist is needed we bring in someone we work with regularly, and we remain responsible for the result.
Why will you not publish prices?
We will, when we have a dataset from our own completed work that we can stand behind. Until then, publishing invented ranges would be worse than publishing none.
Will you tell me if a job is not worth doing?
Yes, and it happens regularly – boilers that are fine, repairs that can wait, and jobs that need a different trade. It costs us call-outs and it is why people call again.
Need this doing?
Call and describe the problem — you will speak to an engineer, not a call centre. Written quotes, no estimates over the phone.
