Why this cluster exists

Water that has passed through chalk carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When it is heated or left to evaporate, those come out of solution as scale. Norfolk’s geology means most of the county is on genuinely hard water, and the consequences show up everywhere:

  • Scale in the heat exchanger, which insulates it and makes the boiler work harder for the same heat.
  • Scale on immersion elements, which is the classic cause of an element failing early.
  • Furred shower heads and tap aerators, which is the visible tip of it.
  • Scale in a combi’s plate heat exchanger, which is a common cause of poor hot water performance on an otherwise healthy boiler.
  • More detergent, more soap, more descaler – an ongoing cost that nobody itemises.
  • Marks on glass and tiles that no amount of cleaning permanently fixes.

Three different things that get confused

This is the distinction that decides whether you buy the right thing, and it is routinely blurred by people selling one of them.

A filter does not soften, and a softener does not filter

They solve different problems and a great deal of money is spent on the wrong one. If your complaint is taste, a softener will not fix it. If your complaint is scale, a drinking water filter will not fix it. Filtration, softening and conditioning separates them properly.

Softener or scale inhibitor is the guide most people actually need – the honest comparison, including when the inhibitor is the sensible answer and the softener is not worth it.

If you are considering a softener

A softener is a genuinely effective piece of equipment and it is not a small commitment. Worth understanding before committing:

  1. It needs space, usually in a kitchen cupboard or a garage, near the incoming main.
  2. It needs a drain connection for the regeneration discharge, with the right air gap.
  3. It needs the right plumbing arrangement, including a hard water drinking tap and correct bypass – there are regulatory requirements here, not just preferences.
  4. It needs salt, which is the ongoing cost and the ongoing task.
  5. It uses water to regenerate, which matters on a meter.
  6. Its efficiency varies enormously between designs – metered against timed regeneration is the single biggest factor in what it costs to run.

Is Norfolk water hard?

Most of the county, yes – it is chalk geology. That is behind a large share of the scale-related faults we see, from immersion elements to combi plate heat exchangers.

Softener or scale inhibitor?

An inhibitor is cheaper and simpler and protects the heating system; a softener removes hardness entirely and affects every outlet. Which is right depends on whether your complaint is the boiler or the whole house.

Will a water filter stop limescale?

No. Filtration removes particles, chlorine, taste and odour. It does not remove hardness. They are different problems and a lot of money gets spent on the wrong one.

Is softened water safe to drink?

A softener installation includes a hard water drinking tap, and there is a reason it exists. The guide covers who should use it and why.

Does a softener need much maintenance?

Salt, regularly, and occasional attention. The bigger variable is the design – metered regeneration versus timed makes a substantial difference to salt and water use.
