Air conditioning vs a heat pump: the same physics, different jobs

Why a split system is a heat pump, what actually differs between them, and which is right for heating a house.

Short answer

Both move heat using a refrigerant cycle. An air-to-air system delivers heat directly into room air; an air-to-water heat pump heats water for radiators, underfloor heating and a cylinder. That distinction determines which suits whole-house heating.

The same machine

Both use a compressor, a condenser, an expansion device and an evaporator to move heat from a cold place to a warmer one. Both can run in either direction with a reversing valve. The underlying physics is identical – see how air conditioning actually works.

The meaningful distinction is what they deliver the heat into:

Where air-to-air genuinely wins

  • You want cooling. This is the decisive one. Most air-to-water heat pumps do not cool, and cooling is the reason most people fit a split system in the first place.
  • One or two rooms, where whole-house heating is not the objective.
  • Fast response, because it heats room air directly rather than a water system.
  • Shoulder-season heating, where warming one occupied room is cheaper than firing the whole central heating system.
  • No emitter changes, because the indoor unit is the emitter.
  • Conservatories and garden rooms, which are hard to heat conventionally and frequently need cooling too.
  • Retrofit simplicity. No cylinder, no radiator changes, no system redesign.

Where air-to-water wins

  • Whole-house heating through the existing radiators or underfloor heating, without a unit in every room.
  • Domestic hot water, which air-to-air cannot provide at all.
  • Comfort. Radiators and underfloor heating produce a more even temperature profile than warm air blown from high on a wall.
  • Grant support, where schemes apply – conditions attach, including certified installation.
  • No indoor units on walls, which matters aesthetically to many people.
  • It replaces a boiler, which air-to-air does not.
The warm-air-from-high-on-a-wall problem

Warm air rises. A wall-mounted indoor unit discharging warm air near the ceiling is working against that, and it produces a room that is warm at head height and cooler at floor level. Floor-mounted and console indoor units are far better for heating and are worth specifying if heating is a genuine part of the intention rather than a bonus.

Using air conditioning as heating: the honest assessment

People increasingly ask whether a split system can heat a house. The answer is nuanced.

What works

  • Heating an individual occupied room efficiently, particularly in mild weather.
  • Supplementing central heating in shoulder seasons rather than firing the whole system.
  • Heating a room the central heating struggles with – a conservatory, an extension, a converted garage.
  • Providing heat in a property with no gas and expensive alternatives.

What does not

  • Whole-house heating without a unit in every room, which is expensive and visually intrusive.
  • Hot water, at all.
  • Even comfort, because of the warm air from high on a wall.
  • Deep winter performance, where efficiency falls as it gets colder.
  • Rooms you want warm on waking, unless scheduled, because there is no thermal mass holding heat.

A reasonable middle position that we see working well: a split system in the rooms that genuinely need cooling, used opportunistically for heating in the shoulder seasons, alongside a conventional heating system for the house and hot water.

Choosing, for a Norfolk property

  1. Do you want cooling? If yes, you want air-to-air, whatever else you do. Nothing else provides it.

  4. Do you need hot water from it? Only air-to-water can.

  6. Is the building ready for low flow temperatures? If not, air-to-water needs emitter work first, and air-to-air does not care.

And a point worth making plainly: these are not competing answers to the same question. A house can sensibly have an air-to-water heat pump or a boiler doing the heating and hot water, and a split system in the one room that overheats in summer. That is frequently the right answer rather than a compromise.

Is air conditioning the same as a heat pump?

Can I heat my whole house with air conditioning?

Is air conditioning cheaper to run for heating than a boiler?

In mild weather, heating one occupied room with a split system is frequently cheaper than firing the whole central heating system. In deep winter, and for the whole house, that advantage narrows or reverses.

Can a heat pump provide cooling?

Some air-to-water systems can provide cooling through underfloor or fan coils, and most do not. If cooling matters to you, an air-to-air system is what provides it.

Which indoor unit type is best for heating?

Floor-mounted or console units, because warm air rises and a high wall unit is working against that. If heating is a genuine part of the intention, specify accordingly.

Can I have both?

Yes, and it is frequently the right answer – a heating system for the house and hot water, plus a split system in the room that overheats in summer. They are not competing answers to the same question.
