There is no shortage of manufacturer information about oil boilers. What there is very little of is honest, accumulated engineer experience – which faults recur on which models, which parts are a nuisance to obtain, which appliances are awkward to service and why, and what a given fault code usually turns out to mean in practice.
That is what these pages are being built to hold. Not rewritten brochure copy, and not opinion – recorded observations from work actually carried out.

A useful fact that applies across all of them: many use burners from a small number of specialist manufacturers, regardless of the badge on the casing. What every oil boiler page covers
- Service procedure specifics – how the burner comes out, baffle arrangement, chamber access, and anything that differs from the general procedure.
- Nozzle specification – size, spray angle and pattern, because fitting the wrong nozzle is a recurring cause of poor combustion.
- Pump pressure to the data plate.
- Electrode gap and position, and how they are set on that appliance.
- Common faults, with what they usually turn out to be rather than what the code says.
- Parts availability, honestly – including when it has become a problem.
- Access quirks, because some appliances fight you and it is worth knowing before you arrive.

The things that apply to all of them
Whatever the make, these determine how long an oil boiler lasts and how well it runs:
- Annual servicing with the burner removed. Not negotiable, and it is the single biggest determinant of lifespan – see what actually happens during an oil boiler service.
- Correct sizing. Most replacements are oversized because they were specified from the old appliance.
- Condensate routing. Internal where possible. This determines whether you have a boiler that fails in January.
- A clean system. A new heat exchanger on a dirty system has a short life.
- The tank and the oil line. A new boiler fed by a failing tank through a tired line will have early-life problems that get blamed on the boiler.
- Position. An external boiler lives a harder life than an internal one – see internal, external or boiler house.

Questions we get asked about this
Which oil boiler make is the most reliable?
There is no honest single answer. The mainstream makes are all competent, and reliability in practice is driven far more by sizing, commissioning, condensate routing and annual servicing than by the badge.
Do they all use the same burner?
Many use burners from a small number of specialist manufacturers. That is good news – it means the wearing components are common across makes and widely available.
Will you work on my make?
We work on all the common makes. Parts availability is the real constraint on very old appliances, and we will tell you straight away if we think a part will be a problem.
Are the model pages available?
They are being built from actual job records rather than manufacturer literature, which takes time. Pages appear as the records support them.
How long should an oil boiler last?
Fifteen to twenty years is typical with proper annual servicing, and a well-built cast iron appliance kept in good condition can exceed it. Servicing is the variable that matters most.
Should I replace like for like?
Staying with the same make is reasonable. Staying with the same output usually is not – the old one was very likely oversized and the house has probably changed since.
