Education work is shaped by term dates, safeguarding requirements and a compliance burden that is scrutinised more closely than most sectors. Scald protection, water hygiene and documented maintenance all matter, and the work happens in holidays.
The calendar is the constraint
Everything substantial happens in the holidays. Summer for major works, Easter and Christmas for medium jobs, half terms for short ones. Term time is for reactive work and for anything that can genuinely be done in an unoccupied part of the building.
That has consequences worth planning for:
- Summer is booked early. A school that decides in June what it wants doing in August is competing with every other school in the county.
- The window is fixed and unforgiving. There is no extending into September. Work has to be programmed to finish with margin, not to finish exactly.
- Long shutdowns create their own problems. Six weeks of stagnant water in a building full of little-used outlets is a water hygiene issue in its own right, and reopening needs a flushing regime – which is also the ideal moment to do it, since the building is empty anyway.
- Heating comes back on after months off. A system that has stood idle since June will reveal its faults in the first cold week of October, which is precisely the wrong time. Commission it in the summer.
The most common school mechanical failure is a heating system that worked in June, stood idle all summer, and fails in the first cold snap of the autumn term. Running plant up under load during the summer holiday – not just checking it, running it – is what prevents that, and it costs almost nothing while the building is already empty.
Safeguarding and site conduct
Working in a school during term is different from any other commercial environment, and the requirements are not negotiable.
- DBS checks appropriate to the level of contact, and the school will want to see them.
- Signing in and out, identification worn visibly at all times.
- Escorted access where required, and an understanding that this slows work down and should be allowed for.
- No unsupervised contact with pupils, and an awareness of what that means practically – not working alone in a corridor during changeover, for instance.
- Tools and materials secured at all times. An unattended toolbag in a school is a hazard.
- Segregated working areas, properly barriered rather than coned.
- Awareness of the school’s own policies, including on photography, which matters when documenting work.
A contractor who treats these as bureaucracy will cause a problem eventually. They are the reason a school will or will not have you back.
Compliance in education
The compliance burden in education is heavier than most sectors and is scrutinised more closely, both by the responsible body and in inspections.

Asbestos deserves emphasis. Schools built between the 1950s and the 1980s frequently contain asbestos-containing materials in exactly the places mechanical services run – boiler rooms, pipe lagging, ceiling voids, riser cupboards. Any work that could disturb it requires the asbestos register to be consulted first, without exception.
Science and food technology
Two areas of a school with requirements that do not apply elsewhere.
Science laboratories
Gas taps at benches, emergency isolation that must be accessible and clearly identified, fume cupboard extraction, and backflow protection at a higher fluid category than most of the building. The emergency gas isolation in a laboratory is a genuine safety control and it is worth confirming it actually works rather than assuming.
Food technology rooms
Multiple domestic-pattern or light commercial appliances in a room used by large numbers of inexperienced people. Ventilation, isolation and appliance condition all matter, and these rooms are frequently maintained less rigorously than a commercial kitchen would be despite carrying comparable risks.
Planning summer works? Book early – the holiday window fills months in advance and it cannot be extended.

Can you work during term time?
For reactive work and for jobs that can be contained in an unoccupied area, yes, with the appropriate safeguarding arrangements. Anything substantial goes in a holiday.
Do your engineers have DBS checks?
Yes, and we will provide evidence to the school before attending. We also expect to sign in, wear identification and work to your site rules.
Our heating fails every October. Why?
Because it stood idle all summer and nobody ran it under load before the cold arrived. Commissioning the plant properly during the summer holiday – running it, not just looking at it – prevents almost all of these.
What about water hygiene over the long holidays?
Six weeks of stagnation in a building with many little-used outlets is a genuine risk factor, and reopening requires a flushing regime. It is also the best moment to do any tank cleaning or remedial work, because the building is empty.
Do we need TMVs in pupil washrooms?
Scald protection at outlets accessible to pupils is expected practice, and TMVs are how it is achieved. They need servicing and their performance verifying on a schedule – a TMV that has drifted is not providing protection.
How far in advance should we book summer works?
As early as you can – ideally by the spring term. Every school in the county wants the same six weeks, and the window cannot be extended.
